Review by New Life Academy Student: Tyree A.
On Wednesday, December 4, the students and teachers of New Life Academy skipped classes and went to Media, PA to see a show instead.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat was a musical with a lot of songs, a lot of dancing, and a live band in front of the stage. The songs told the Biblical story of Joseph and his jealous brothers. Joseph’s brothers sell him as a slave and tell their father he died. Joseph gets into trouble and finds himself in jail, but he ends up being the Pharaoh’s friend. The brothers who abandoned him eventually come crawling back for help.
The story was trying to show the audience not to get jealous or upset over little things like a coat. Don’t throw your brother out because of it. The show also shows how bad things can turn into good things. If Joseph had not been abandoned, he would not have become successful. In the end, he was able to help his brothers. Good came out of it, after all.
Kyle Lowder was the star of the show. People might recognize him from the daytime television show, The Bold and the Beautiful. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the show Days of Our Lives. In Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Kyle Lowder spent a lot of time running around without his shirt on. If there is one thing that people will remember, it is that he needed a shirt.
The show used a lot of special effects like smoke from a fog machine and videos on a screen. The set made use of many colors, just like Joseph’s coat, and the costumes were colorful, too. One of the characters, the Pharaoh, was made up to resemble Elvis. Some of the characters looked like French people.
The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyrics were written by Tim Rice. Rice and Webber are famous for other Broadway hits like The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats.
Some of the performers were not professional actors and dancers. They were students in the theater school run by The Media Theater. The students have special permission to miss school during the day so they can appear in the show.
The show will be running till January 5, 2014, and people interested in seeing the it can get more information at http://www.mediatheatre.org.
